Get Going Faster Than Ever

It is now easier than ever to get your ownCloud up and running. On the download page we offer a fully pre-configured virtual machine image which you can easily run in a tool like VirtualBox. Thanks to ownCloud Proxy you can have a stable url and an easy way through firewalls blocking you from accessing your ownCloud.

For users of our ‘Stable’ release channel: we have moved away from the openSUSE Open Build Service instance to our own on download.owncloud.org. You can find ownCloud Server 8.2 Linux packages here and for automatic updates to new releases, find our new stable repository here.

Also please note that the behavior of the packages has changed. Rather than attempting to automatically upgrade ownCloud, it puts ownCloud Server in maintenance mode and leaves the actual upgrade to the system administrator. This makes it far easier to catch and deal with issues which might happen on upgrade, rather than forcing the admin to go in and look for what went wrong after things broke.

We have published a post with tips and information on how to upgrade and we highly recommend reading it. As always, the upgrade with the built in updater app is scheduled to come through some time next month.

More Intuitive for End Users

This release introduces significant design improvements. The user interface was cleaned up, giving a stronger focus on the content you are looking for. The new sidebar makes it easy to view details on a file without cluttering the interface, providing a larger preview, file activity overview, sharing state and older versions in one place.

The Gallery app replaces the Pictures app for browsing and viewing images. Supporting a wider range of image formats, better performance and bringing more features, Gallery presents a significant step up. You can now sort and zoom in and out on images, quickly switch between the Gallery and Files apps and more.

More Control for Administrators

ownCloud Server 8.2 makes it possible for ownCloud Administrators to send their users notifications, useful to let users know about a maintenance window for example. Admins can now also set limits on trash and version retention, ensuring that trashed files and versions get deleted after a set number of days or are not purged for a certain period.

The occ command line tool has gained significant new maintenance and control features. It enables encrypting, decrypting and re-encrypting existing user data and can now set and get system and app configuration values. It can also be used to rescan the file system and update mime types after custom types have been defined.

And as part of our continued work on making ownCloud the most secure open source file sync and share solution, there has been a considerable amount of security hardening.

Developers Built Faster

ownCloud Server 8.2 introduces many improvements to the API, both to make more functionality available for app developers and to improve the existing interfaces. A major change is the addition of a capabilities manager which allow apps to expose capabilities in a more generic way. App authors also now have access to a public API for the doctrine query builder.
