Great Idea, a few issues. You need to lead by example, why do I have to create a password to edit this wiki? To control my data, allow me to use something like openid for authentication.

As for the license, the AGPL scares me. The AGPL sounds great when the "other guy" runs your software. But, if I want to host my own cloud on my own server simply to be able to interact with others, I would like to retain the ability to make personal private modifications. In other words, when you think "big corporation" locking up user's data, naturally you should be concerned, and perhaps in this case the AGPL is a good tool to reduce abuse. But, when you think every individual running their own server controlling their own personal data, the AGPL may seems rather out of place. I expect that this project aims for some middle ground between these two use cases, but with the AGPL,it would seem highly biased against the latter use case. IMHO MartinFick

There are grid/dht systems where you get most of the features you want, and omemo, freenet ot gnunet are known participants to this field, but there are distributed datastores ideas like here and here where performance could be really good, keeping desired distributed storage properties.
Because once storage space, replication and versioning is not an issue, then you can attach any user experience you want on top of that, so I see very different problems here:
  • Where is the data stored? How pays for the iron needed? Do we all contribute? Someone buys hardware and sells access to it?
  • Once storage is solved, we need the nodes of the cloud to run programs. So we need a language and a sdk. If it were my only decision, I would use a fork of appdrop over the datastore nodes, with no promises of compatibility.
  • When you hace the platform, what user experience is attached to it? would your computer illiterate friend understand how to use it? Does it have a market? Does it shine?
  • This infrastructure allows a cloud IM, cloud storage, cloud email, cloud writer and so on. If you can come up with a better idea than distributed storage space and the son of an appengine clone on top of it for the open source cloud, let me know. Eddie 01:30, 28 January 2010 (UTC)

CloudStoragePlugIns

A PlugIn to show Files stored in other clouds - like DropBox/UbuntuOne/etc - within ownCloud would be nice. --RalphMW 00:00, 30 June 2010 (UTC)
